Bronze and Marble
Zaivy Zaets was my first sculpture, created while I was learning to sculpt in Ukraine. Inspired by Brer Rabbit, it captures the hare, legs flailing and ears flopping, as he’s tossed into the briar patch. He’s outsmarted the wolf, but what’s that gotten him? The polished bronze of his eyes and paws adds sharp points of warmth against the cool white. The heavy base holds tight, but the hare’s motion feels untethered.
This piece was shown in the Ukraine Triennial of Sculpture in 2020, the first American artwork to be featured there. The title, Zaivy Zaets—An Unneeded Hare, gets at the underlying emotional question – why can being released feel like being discarded?
